ANALYSIS OF RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION, RESOURCE UTILIZATION AND PUPILS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES IN IBADAN SOUTH WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OYO STATE

Abstract

Resource distribution and utilization are integral parts of the overall management of the school. Education in a school is determined by provision of resources, their maximum utilization and management. Advances in science and technology necessitates that the school manager should adopt modern methods of facilities management in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning. This study investigated the effect of resource distribution and utilization on the academic performance of primary school pupils in mathematics and English language. The study adopted survey design. The variables of the study included resource distribution, resource utilization and pupils’ academic performance in Mathematics and English language. The population of the study comprised all primary school head-teachers, all primary school teachers and all primary IV pupils in South West Local Government Area, Ibadan.  Simple randomly sampling techniques was used to select 6 primary schools, 6 head-teachers, 60 teachers and 60 primary IV pupils in South West Local Government Area, Ibadan. The sample size was 126. Four self-constructed instruments were used to collect data. They were Resource Availability Inventory (RAI), Resource Utilization Scale (RUS), Resource Utilization Questionnaires (RUQ, Pupils’ Performance Score Sheet (PPSS). The instruments were validated using appropriate methods. The data was analysed using frequency counts percentages, mean and person product moment correlation. The finding of this study implied that the teacher available in the primary school in South West were neither enough nor adequate; all available resources (classrooms, pupils’ chairs, pupils’ desks, teachers’ chairs, teachers’ tables; audio materials, visual materials, audio-visual materials; play equipment; toilets; Mathematics textbook and English textbooks) were not adequate;  and all available resources (classrooms, pupils’ chairs, pupils’ desks, teachers’ chairs, teachers’ tables; audio materials, visual materials, audio-visual materials; play equipment; toilets; Mathematics textbook and English textbooks) were over-utilized. Resources in the primary schools were not adequate and over-utilized. The study recommends adequate distribution of resource for improved pupils’ performance in Mathematics and English language.
