FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST IMPROVISATION OF SCIENCE TEACHING MATERIALS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN GOMBE STATE

Abstract

The researcher conducted a research on the factors militating against improvisation of science teaching materials in secondary schools in Gombe state. To carry out the research, the research used questionnaire as an instrument for gathering relevant information from science teachers, school administration and students in five selected schools for the study. A total number of one hundred and fifty students and teachers randomly selected were used for the study; also two. hundred and thirty school administrators were used. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, means, grand means and standard deviation. The result revealed that the major problems facing science teachers in improvisation are lack of funds to carry out improvisation, poor science teacher's preparation, lack of motivation by school authorities. Hence, recommendations were made in the area of providing funds to aid teachers to make improvisation with the immediate surroundings. Organize work shop seminar and conference periodically for teachers to update their professional competencies especially in the area of technology and improvisation each and learn either in cash or kind for teachers who carry out periodic improvisation to teach and learn science.
