Abstract

This study evaluates adult literacy programmes in Niger State, Nigeria. Adult literacy serves as a vital tool for changing people’s attitude to achieve ethical awareness. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for this study was 2,286 which comprised adult literacy facilitators and participants from which sample size of 450 was chosen using the Multi Stage Sampling Technique. To guide the study three research questions were stated, simple percentage was used to show the distribution of respondents and mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data in order to answer the research questions. The findings revealed that basic literacy, post literacy and advanced literacy programmes were the major and functional types of adult literacy programmes in Niger State and the opinion of adult learners on adult literacy programmes in Niger State was positive because it met the competency, growth, sense of belonging and problem-solving needs of the adult learners. Based upon the findings, the study recommended that Niger State Government through the State Agency for Mass Education should create more awareness in order to boost peoples’ participation in adult literacy programmes. This can be done through radio and television programmes and the need for the state government to create more adult literacy centres for wider coverage of the programmes so as to meet other essential needs of the adult learners.
