ANALYSIS OF PUBLIC PERCEPTION, ATTITUDE, AND PERCEIVED EFFECTIVENESS OF SUSTAINABLE URBAN FREIGHT LOGISTICS MEASURES IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

Abstract
The demand for urban freight transport services has increased in the last decade, making freight transport a significant contributing factor to the sustainability of the urban environment. This study explores truck drivers’ and owners’ attitude towards sustainable mobility solution to urban freight transport and delivery in Lagos Metropolitan Areas. Understanding public perception, attitude and perceived effectiveness of the policy is a major part of the policy implementation problem, filling a major research need. This study adopts a quantitative and cross-sectional survey research design. Three hundred (300) structured questionnaires were administered to truck drivers and owners, Police officers, Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials, and members of the public using a purposive sampling technique. The findings of this study that the freight transport problems in Lagos, Nigeria included: Breakdown of trucks on the road/highway, Parking of trucks on the road-side (on-street parking), Tanker truck explosion, Speeding, Use of underage / teenage truck drivers, Poor maintenance and over-loading of trucks, Bad road and poor road infrastructure.
