TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION MEDIA AND POLITICAL AWARENESS A PANACEA OF CREDIBLE ELECTION AND GOVERNANCE

Abstract
This study examined the Traditional communication media and political awareness; as a panacea of credible election and governance was investigated in this study. In line with the purpose of the study, three research questions were posed. Agenda setting theory was adopted as the theory for this study. The population of residents in Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre local government was used. The findings of the study revealed that the significant level of equal media coverage given to political parties as follows: Most of the political parties receive more attention than others and that all political parties invite at least one media organization to cover their programmes. Also, the significant relationship between media coverage and a free & fair election shows that It produces free and fair elections, and encourages violence free elections, the significant level of media exposure of electoral is that It exposes malpractices during elections, thus the study recommends that the; the government should support the media houses and journalist to bring out their best during & after elections to checkmate malpractices and to improve governance.
