RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONNEL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES AND TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN GOMBE STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
The study investigates the relationship between personnel development practices and senior secondary school teachers’ job performance in Gombe State. Six research questions were raised and six hypotheses were formulated. The area of the study is Gombe State and the population of the study consists of 2621 academic personnel of senior secondary schools that are stationed in 154 Senior Secondary Schools in Gombe State. The sample size of 493 was drawn from the entire population using multi-stage sampling techniques. Structured questionnaires were designed by the researcher and based on the research topic tagged: “Personnel Development Practices Questionnaire (PEDEPRAQ) and Teachers Job Performance Questionnaire (TEJOPEQ). The instrument was validated by four experts. The reliability coefficient of 0.85 and 0.76 respectively was obtained using Cronbach Alpha Method. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used in testing the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between personnel development and teachers’ job performance in Gombe state (r= 0.739, n = 493, p < 0.05). Based on the findings, it was concluded that there is a significant and strong relationship between personnel recruitment, training, promotion, job design, personnel planning and senior secondary school teachers’ job performance in Gombe State, Nigeria.
